What if Halloween was never just about candy and costumes?
Long before trick or treating, there was Samhain. Over 2,000 years ago in Ireland, communities marked the end of the harvest and the turn into the darker half of the year. They lit fires on hilltops. They feasted from what they had gathered. They told stories to keep the dark at bay.
If you love Halloween like I do, you probably know that thread already. I have known about Samhain for years (thanks Buffy!), and it is still one of my favorite pieces of folklore to follow into real-world travel.
As a pop culture travel specialist and CLIA Certified travel agent with The Wander Network, I plan trips for people who feel things deeply about the stories they love. And Ireland in autumn is one of those places that feels like stepping directly into the story.
IrishCentral just shared their guide to Ireland in autumn: the festivals, feasts, and fall magic you will not want to miss. It lines up with what Fáilte Ireland is doing this year through their Ireland Home of Halloween program.
What is Ireland Home of Halloween?

Ireland is the authentic birthplace of Halloween, and this autumn they are bringing those ancient traditions to life across seven hubs: Longford and Westmeath, Meath and Louth, Dublin, Galway, Kerry, Kilkenny, and Limerick.
The program runs from early October into early November and reimagines Samhain through food, folklore, music, storytelling, and spectacle. Think less plastic pumpkins. More ritual fires, giant puppets, and banquets in secret historic venues.
Nerdventure Highlights: My Favorite Autumn Experiences in Ireland
- Fire and Folklore in Kerry
Samhain Chiarraí turns Kerry into a stage for fire and folklore. Highlights include Fires of Samhain, Music and Celebration with the Dingle Druid, where communities gather for ritual fire ceremonies with music and storytelling. There is also Idir Dhá Shaol, Between Two Worlds, with giant illuminated puppets, drummers, fire performers, and stilt walkers in Killarney and Tralee. It draws on the story of An Cailleach Chiarraí, Kerry’s Goddess of Winter. - Samhain Feasts in Limerick
Limerick takes a deliciously dark turn. On October 17 and 24, Morbid and Sons Pop-Up Funeral Shop brings a macabre musical experience to the city. On October 30, the Samhain Banquet takes guests on a mystery journey to a secret historic venue for seasonal food, storytelling, and live performance inspired by Irish mythology. This one is unmissable if you love immersive dining. - Spectacle in Galway
On the west coast, Galway brings its creative energy to Gaillimh Abú! Macnas is celebrating 40 years of spectacular street performance with a free city centre parade on October 25 filled with giant puppetry and theatrical storytelling. The wider program mixes folklore, food, comedy, and after-dark events. - Samhain in the Heartlands: Longford and Westmeath
This is where the old stories feel closest to the landscape. The Fire and Shadows Procession in Longford on Halloween night is inspired by Celtic mythology and the legends of Rathcroghan and Oweynagat, with storytelling and harvest food experiences across the region. - Orchard Feasts in Armagh to Magic in Meath
From Armagh’s orchard feasts to Drogheda transformed by the Lú Festival of Light and Púca Festival’s fire and storytelling in Meath and Louth, this is the season Ireland shows its true colors. Fingal in North County Dublin hosts an immersive Samhain dining experience after dark at Malahide Castle, and medieval Kilkenny leans into Toil and Trouble and the story of Alice Kyteler.

If you were not able to make it to Ireland this Halloween, this is the perfect moment to start planning for next year! A lot of these events have limited capacity and secret venues, so early planning makes a real difference.
Who Is This Trip For?
This trip is for you if you have ever thought, what if my Halloween trip actually felt like folklore? It is for couples who want something more meaningful than a beach holiday, for friends who bonded over witchy aesthetics and fantasy novels, and for anyone who wants their travel to feel like stepping into another world.
You focus on the magic. I will handle the logistics.
